Book Review: My Thoughts on Darkwood by M.E. Breen

This is the debut novel by M.E. Breen. It is written for young adult readers, although more mature readers can appreciate this story as well.

Annie is being raised by her Aunt Prim and Uncle Jock since her parents' death. Her Uncle Jock is a little extreme...and VERY mean. Aunt Prim seems to be trapped in her relationship with this ogre. One night, a mysterious man shows up at her home and he and Uncle Jock make some sort of deal involving Annie. Instead of sticking around to find out what it is, she and her two cats take off into the darkness. When it's dark....it's dark...utterly dark...can't see your hand in front of you. Then, there's the kinderstalk...and they don't play games.

Along the way, Annie meets two kind women who take her in. Then there's the castle and the king and learning some deep dark family secrets. What will happen to change the course of Annie's life?

My thoughts: I had a difficult time getting into this book and I really don't know why. I didn't feel that the characters were fully developed, however the scenery was described beautifully. I was left with many questions, some of which were done purposely. I am fairly confident that a sequel is being planned. Overall, this book was enjoyable and I'll read the sequel when it comes out.
