Review: Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5)Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The newest book in the Mercedes Thompson series is focused on the wolf, Samuel. He's really gotten himself into a bind with what he's done. It's up to Mercy to figure it out. If the pack gets involved, it won't be a good outcome for Samuel! While trying to protect Samuel, Mercy ticks off a TV producer and ends up in a heap of trouble herself. In the process, she takes Gabriel down with her (not purposely). Can her mate bond with Adam be enough to save her and Samuel?

In this book, the reader learns more of the bonds of a wolf pack. The ins and outs. How they communicate with the Alpha and the Marrock. The reader also learns more about the Fae and how they operate.

Recommended for readers of paranormal romance and fans of Patricia Briggs.

Thanks to Mindi (a student) for letting me borrow this book for some summer reading! :)

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB over at Should Be Reading.

TEASER TUESDAYS asks you to:

Grab your current read. Let the book fall open to a random page.

Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!

Please avoid spoilers!!

"Butt kicking being part and parcel of the service, both on the giving and receiving end," agreed Adam, without opening his eyes.

Nightlight: A Parody by Harvard Lampoon

Nightlight: A Parody of Twilight Nightlight: A Parody of Twilight by Harvard Lampoon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I bought this book because I am a fan of Twilight and I wanted to see what take this book would have. It started out great! I loved it! My students kept telling me that I would love the book...especially Edwart's character. It didn't take me long to see why they thought that! I found out that Edwart was a man after my own heart...a germaphobe!! The only difference between Edwart and I is that I despise Purell. The stuff doesn't work people!!! My students test it every year in lab and prove that it doesn't work so save your money!

Ahem...so I need to get back on topic...

I loved this book for the first 100 pages. After that, it just got stupid in my opinion. I mean, why ruin the end of the book? They could have just stopped at page 100 and been done with it but they had to pervert the story to the point of boredom. There were many great scenes and lines (most in my opinion revolved around Edwart and the Purell)but my overall impression is that this book was just ok.

Now back to my countdown of the release of Eclipse!! :)

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments, #2) City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
City of Ashes is the second book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I was itching to start this one right away after finishing the first book, City of Bones.

I really can't say much about this book without giving a lot of way so this will be a very brief review. I LOVED this book. Don't get me wrong, the first book was good, but this one was AWESOME! There was a lot more action and the reader sees more of Valentine in this book. This book also goes into more detail about the Clave and it's rules.

My least favorite character, who I grew to love a little towards the end of the book is the Inquisitor. My favorite character is Simon. I just love the story line of his life. It's so bittersweet!

The one thing I despised about this book is the ending. Thank goodness I have City of Glass sitting next to me so I won't have to wait long for some answers!!!

Great News for Fans of The Mortal Instruments Series!!!!

I saw this today and just had to share!!! Check out the full article here...

There's going to be a fourth Mortal Instruments book. I'm going to paste in the news from the press release here. Keep in mind that everyone sounds like a jerk in press releases for some reason.

New York, NY, August 24, 2009—Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, has acquired City of Fallen Angels, a fourth book in Cassandra Clare’s bestselling young adult fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments, which has over 1 million books in print. The story follows Simon, a character from the first three Mortal Instruments novels, City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass, as he adjusts to life as a vampire. City of Fallen Angels will publish in hardcover in March 2011, followed by a paperback edition in July 2012.

Love, blood, betrayal and revenge — the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. Simon Lewis is having some trouble adjusting to his new life as a vampire, especially now that he hardly sees his best friend Clary, who is caught up in training to be a Shadowhunter—and spending time with her new boyfriend Jace. Not to mention that Simon doesn't quite know how to handle the pressure of not-quite-dating two girls at once. What's a daylight-loving vampire to do? Simon decides he needs a break and heads out of the city—only to discover that sinister events are following him. Realizing that the war they thought they'd won might not yet be over, Simon has to call on his Shadowhunter friends to save the day — if they can put their own splintering relationships on hold long enough to rise to the challenge.

“Simon has always been one of my favorite characters to write about, and I’m excited to get the chance to tell his story while revisiting some of the other characters that I love form The Mortal Instruments series,” said Cassandra Clare. “The enthusiasm for telling Simon’s story that I’ve received from the team at McElderry Books and Simon & Schuster has been great and I’m excited to be working with them to bring a fourth book to the series.”

Also, keep in mind that — despite the apparent finality of press releases — release dates and titles are all subject to change.

You know you want to comment....go ahead....I'm probably just as excited as you are!!! I've just started book 2 earlier tonight, but all the same, I'm totally stoked!!!

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, #1) City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have heard several things about this series from different students of mine. They all told me it was a good series and I'm glad that I listened to them!! Overall, I'd rate this 4.7 stars!

Clary is your "typical teenager" who likes to go to parties and hang out with her friends. It's a party at the Pandemonium that starts a series of problems for Clary. She runs into all sorts of non-human creatures and finds out that she may not be all human either.

This book has a lot of adventure, romance, and a few comedic scenes. One of my favorite conversations is between Jace and Clary at a poetry reading...

"Your friends poetry is terrible," he said.
Clary blinked, caught momentarily off guard. "What?"
"I said his poetry was terrible. It sounds like he ate a dictionary and started vomiting up words at random."

I think you'd like this book if you enjoy urban and paranormal fantasies. Thanks Mindi for hooking me up with this series!!!

Book Review: Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs

Bone Crossed (Mercedes Thompson, #4) Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Mercy Mercy Mercy...she does it all again!! While still trying to recover from her fiasco from Iron Kissed, Mercy is given a new "mission" dealing with vampires and fae. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I read it very quickly (including while trying to order dinner at IHOP). However, it's time to read something else for a change. This is a great stopping place in this series though since Patricia Briggs is still working on the next book in the series.

One other thing I will say about this book (I don't want to give anything away!!) is that I'm not pleased with the choice of man for her. I'm hoping this will change as the series progresses. I will tell you who I want to see her with, but only if you ask. :)

Book Review: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Werewolves, vampires, and fae, OH MY!!! This is the third book in the Mercy Thompson series and this one featured the story of the fae. Iron Kissed starts out pretty intense and doesn't let up until the end!! I'm not sure this is my favorite of the series but out of the three it's in the top 2.

I learned so much more about fae during the reading of this book!! They seem to be such fun creatures. If I had to pick between being a werewolf, vampire, or fae, I think I'd pick fae so I could be G-L-A-M-O-R-OUS whenever I wanted to be!!!

Patricia Briggs has written one more book in this series called Bone Crossed. It is my next book to read. After that I'm going to take a break from the mystical world and settle in with some of the other books stacking up around me. I like to keep my reading varied and I have some really good books that keep begging my attention. If you don't attend to them, they just might turn on you!!! LOL

Book Review: Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Blood Bound (Mercedes Thompson, #2) Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Blood Bound is the second book in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I, by far, enjoyed this book so much more than the first Moon Called. There was more action (mainly with the vampires this time and I'm more of vampire than werewolf fan), a twist in the love interests of various characters in this book, and it had me hooked from the very beginning.

I am still in love with the fact that their are some non-traditional roles highlighted in this book. Mercy is an auto mechanic amongst other things. Not many authors highlight non-traditional careers. This is one thing that drew me into this series. I also love the very vivid descriptions about vampires and werewolves that are used in this book. I feel as though I'm there, smelling the smells, hearing the screams, and that I'm in the thick of things.

I do not envy Mercy in this book as I did in the first one. She has far too many issues for me to deal with. As far as her choice for lovers go, I can't decide who I'd rather see her with. I also have a few more in mind than possibly the author is alluding to so please don't assume I've narrowed it down to two!! :)

My only real *complaint* about this series is that the book covers don't seem to match up with Mercy's character. The covers look a bit, umm...slutty but I don't get that vibe from Mercy in these books. We know she does have a tat on her stomach but other than that, there is no mention of these others that the covers are depicting. Truthfully, had this book not been practically forced in my face by a student, I probably would have never picked it up to read based on the cover. This just goes to show that you really can't always judge a book by it's cover!!

I now look forward to reading the next book in this series Iron Kissed!!
