The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods

The Lost BookshopThe Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very enjoyable book to listen to while I was out getting some fresh air. The narrators did a great job conveying the story of their characters. There were times that I became a bit confused about the storyline but overall, it was still enjoyable. The quest to find the missing manuscript was my favorite part of the story.

Love's Every Whisper (Eagle Harbor #2) by Naomi Rawlings

Love's Every Whisper (Eagle Harbor #2)Love's Every Whisper by Naomi Rawlings
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elijah has been in love with Victoria for over 15 years. His background as a fisherman's son doesn't give him the clout that he needs to marry, let alone court, the daughter of a shipping baron. As Victoria struggles to find her way in life, and hopefully marry one day, Elijah is out rescuing men left and right from the waters of Lake Superior. Another man comes into the picture, one that Victoria is much more suited for socially. The question is, can Elijah save her from her own personal drowning?

This is a great story with many enjoyable elements. There is a forbidden love, someone trying to swoop in, action, danger, reconciling, sweet romance, and so much more. The narrator of this audiobook did a great job conveying the different emotions of each character throughout the story. This is the second book in a series and can be read as a standalone but it's fun to see previous characters popping in to say "Hi!".

Queenpin Chronicles Books 1 & 3 by L.L. Kirchner

Florida Girls (Queenpin Chronicles, #1)Florida Girls by L.L. Kirchner
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I truly love historical fiction, especially in the area of World War II. Thelma is joining a group of traveling and competing swimsuit models in an attempt to get away from her criminal past. What she didn't bargain for is finding herself deep in mob activities.

This book showcases the strong stands that the women of the 40's took when the men started coming home from the war.

The author has done a great deal of research to ensure that the elements of this story are historically accurate. It has enhanced the story more and I look forward to reading more in this series.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this book much more than the first one in the series. I skipped over book 2 (VegasVegas Girls so I felt a little lost in some areas but I still found this story enjoyable.

This one does have a dual timeline, which I do struggle with in keeping up with the details. Sally is on a quest to find out what her mother was researching back in the 1940's. The mystery has her encountering people that she never expected and learning more about her mother's devotion to her career.

Again, well researched by the author and an enjoyable story.

Love's Unfading Light (Eagle Harbor Series #1) by Naomi Rawlings

Love's Unfading Light (Eagle Harbor #1)Love's Unfading Light by Naomi Rawlings
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a beautifully written story about Tressa, a bakery owner, her 10 year old son, and Mac. Tressa's a recent widow who's quickly learning that her former husband was quite the scoundrel. He's wracked up a pretty healthy stack of debt and everyone is calling on Tressa to make amends for his misdeeds. As she struggles with all this, money that she had saved up to pay her rent on her bakery is stolen, further putting her in the crosshairs of the money-hungry men of Eagle Harbor, Michigan.

Mac enters the picture and sees that Tressa is really in need of some help. She is done with men and does not want or need any help that Mac provides but he keeps offering anyway. It's when she's being threatened further that she finally relents and allows him to step in for assistance.

I listened to this audiobook and found the narrator very easy to listen to. I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts

Finding DorothyFinding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you're a fan of the Wizard of Oz, you will love this story! This is told through the perspective of Maud Baum, the wife of L. Frank Baum. I learned so many interesting things about the making of the movie, as well as how the books came about. Maud was a force to be reckoned with and worked very hard to make sure the story her husband wrote was told properly! I love the stories of Maud and Judy Garland and their meetings.
The things that I learned have given me a greater appreciation for this movie and the work of Mr. Baum. The struggles he and his family faced will make you want to do a fist pump next time you see the movie or read the books.
I highly recommend this great read!

More Than Meets the Eye (Patchwork Family #1) by Karen Witemeyer

More Than Meets the Eye (Patchwork Family, #1)More Than Meets the Eye by Karen Witemeyer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is such a great book!! It starts out with gut wrenching information about Evangeline and her family. Then things seem to smooth out and be alright. Then more drama ensues with a very sweet ending. I was all over the place with my emotions in this book. There is prejudice, there is murder, there is gambling, there is redemption, there is romance, and so much more!

I'm looking forward to reading book 2.5 in this series as I read book 2 before reading this one. Thank you, Karen Witemeyer for writing such amazing books!

An Ivy Hill Christmas (Tales from Ivy Hill) by Julie Klassen

An Ivy Hill Christmas (Tales from Ivy Hill)An Ivy Hill Christmas by Julie Klassen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a fun little novella that I had intended to read during the Christmas season but just now got around to reading it. My favorite characters in this book are Wally, the terrier, and Jaime. I loved hearing about the outfit that Wally was wearing and it just made me chuckle as I was diving into this story. I pictured Richard to be a bit like Scrooge with his attitude but his heart was more like Tiny Tim. Most didn't see Richard as a kind individual but he's more likely to do things behind the scenes. They also hold his past against him.

This is a heartwarming holiday story that is sure to delight no matter what time of the year it's read.

If the Boot Fits by Karen Witemeyer

Coming March 2024!!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This beautifully written book is a retelling of the classic Cinderella story with a western twist.

The Three Cedars Ranch is hosting a ball, or rather Eli Dearing is hosting the ball, in the hopes of wrangling a husband for his daughter Samantha. She's not happy about it because she just returned home from her schooling in Boston and she doesn't need or want Daddy's help in finding a man. In her time away, Sam has become rather prim and proper but also has a wild side to her.

Clint Dearing is the younger brother of Samantha and he's just now starting to learn the ins and outs of running a ranch. It's a lot of work but he's learning a lot and super happy to have his sister home.

Asher Ellis is a ranch hand at the Bar 7 Ranch but he comes home to take care of Momma Bess and his younger siblings. When he learns that Eli Dearing has evicted his family from their home, Asher sets out to find out why. He dares to enter the ball to find the study and the paperwork he needs to confront Mr. Dearing about putting his family in dire straits. When Mr. Dearing enters the study and hears something, Asher has no choice but to jump out the window.

A pursuit takes place and Clint finds himself in the pond and he can't swim. Sam is screaming for help and Asher jumps in to save Clint. He leaves behind a clue to his identity but that could come back to haunt him eventually.

This is a clean romance novel that is full of adventure, family secrets, traitors, and lots of good cooking! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to many more from author!

The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen

The Sisters of Sea View (On Devonshire Shores, #1)The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When the Summers family loses their patriarch very suddenly, they find themselves losing their standing in the community that they were so well acquainted with at one time. Sarah, the acting oldest sister in the family, makes a decision that could either diminish their standing forever or could make a positive impact on their lives. Opening their home as a place for people to stay while travelling, they expect to cater to a much older crowd due to their proximity to the healing sea waters. However, they find themselves entertaining a variety of age groups and social standings. Viola, a very "special" sister refuses to do any of the grunt work but has agreed that she will read to invalid people. Each family member finds themselves having to dig deep within to save the family from leaving their beloved home.

I enjoyed this story very much. There is a couple of sweet romances brewing, a mysterious "missing" sister, an ailing mother, and lots of decision making in a time when women were frowned upon for running businesses on their own.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

A Bride for Noah (Brides of Broken Arrow #1) by Cheryl Wright

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a great read for a rainy afternoon!!

Noah was angry when he found out in order to receive his inheritance, he had to marry....and quickly!

Mary is upset that she can't keep up her vegetable garden because her father keeps giving all the carrots to the pigs. Doesn't he care for her more than that?

So, what are two desperate people to do who don't even know each other? Get married, of course!

Will Mary stay past the contracted marriage date or will Noah ask her to leave before the year is even up?

This is a sweet story of a contractual marriage and how it all worked out. I didn't realize this was a novella until it was over and I found myself wanting to know even more about the characters. I did enjoy this short read and would highly recommend it!

Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano

Behind the Scenes (Apart from the Crowd, #1)Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you are looking for a historical christian read with a lot of humor, run out and grab a copy of this book today!!

I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure I've never read anything by Jen Turano prior to picking this one up to read. I am already anxiously awaiting the next story in this series as I love the style of writing Jen uses to convey her story. The humor in the book is very appropriate and a few times I even found myself snorting because the situation was so funny! Sometimes, they are even subtly funny, which to me makes it even more interesting.

Miss Permilia Griswold is a known wallflower in social circles. She bumbles through events and then faces the wrath of her step-mother and step-sister. They simply don't understand why Permilia insists on being frugal with her purchases, especially when it comes to social attire!! Imagine Miss Permilia's horror when Asher Rutherford comes here way at the largest social event of the year, held at the Vanderbilt mansion! Of course, she loses all sense of polite society graces and actually appears that she may have insulted the greatest fashion merchant in the area. Something really attracts Asher to Permilia and she to him and they find themselves dancing. Permilia manages to blunder through that as well and can only save Asher's reputation by composing an article utilizing her secret talents as Ms. Quill.

During a rather daring adventure during the Vanderbilt event, Permilia finds herself in a predicament, overhearing a plot that could change many events in coming days. How will she protect those she cares about?

There were so many elements in this book that made it extremely enjoyable. As previously mentioned, I loved the humor scattered throughout. Without trying to spoil too much, during a scene with the Huxley sisters, I couldn't help but think of a Miranda Lambert song ("Mama's Broken Heart"--even though the storyline of the song did not match their story) and it made a very serious situation a little humorous to me. I also loved the adventure scattered throughout this story. Permilia is full of sass and is surely a very independent woman of her time. The romance is subtle but the forces of attraction are very strong.

I would recommend this book to lovers of historical christian fiction who enjoy humor and romance. I am looking forward to the next book in this series!!

Many thanks to Bethany House Publishing and Jen Turano for providing a complimentary review copy of this book through NetGalley. The thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

Andi Saddles Up by Susan K. Marlow

Andi Saddles Up (Circle C Stepping Stones #1)Andi Saddles Up by Susan K. Marlow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It's Andi's birthday and what she wants most is to have a new saddle for her horse, Taffy. She also wants to be able to ride her horse whenever and wherever she wants. She's opening her gifts and there isn't a new saddle anywhere among those gifts.

After awhile, Andi's brother calls from the barn and Andi sees a brand new saddle on her horse. Then her brother, Chad, takes her on a ride and shows her a spot she can call her own. Andi is so excited about this serene spot that Chad has shared with her and she spends hours there. During one particular day there, Andi hears someone riding up and sees a young girl about the same age as she. Andi hops down from the tree she's in to find out her new friend's name is Sadie. There's a problem though...Sadie is the daughter of the sheep herder across the way that is causing her family some issues with their land. Andi doesn't let that stop her from befriending the young girl.

Andi loves being able to ride her horse to her special spot and to meet up with her new friend there. One day, Andi learns that Sadie can ride bareback and do tricks on her horse. Andi has always wanted to learn to do that!! Sadie begins to show Andi how to do these tricks when something terrible happens. How will the families deal with this tragedy? Can peace ever be restored?

I recommend this book to young readers. There are many valuable lessons presented in this book that apply to today's kids, even though this happened back in the 1800's. It will also give a brief glimpse into what life was like 'back then'. I love how Andi and her family are not afraid to express their beliefs as well. We need more books like this one for our youth of today!!

Many thanks to Susan K. Marlow and Kregel Publishing for the complimentary copy of this book to review. All thoughts and recommendations are my own in this writing.

Andi Under the Big Top by Susan K. Marlow

Andi Under the Big Top (Circle C Stepping Stones #2)Andi Under the Big Top by Susan K. Marlow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Andi is super excited as she sees all the posters going up around town about the upcoming circus. She's never been to the circus before, at least not that she remembers, until her older siblings remind her of the clowns. Suddenly, going to the circus doesn't have quite the thrill it once did, but Andi is still super excited to go!

Andi is in awe as she sees trick riders with their horses. One horse even looks like Taffy! Andi does wonder why the horses are not a matching pair but that thought quickly goes away when Miss Minnie Mae looks Andi's direction and waves. She's the coolest trick horse rider around!

Henry is a wee lad who is working in the circus. He befriends Andi and her siblings and Andi learns that he has a family. Andi also learns that his family is his aunt and uncle. Henry didn't want to work on their farm so he ran away and joined the circus. Henry quickly learned that circus life wasn't all that great and that some people were really mean. Henry misses his family dearly and wants to go back but cannot afford the train ticket home. He also isn't sure his aunt and uncle would want him back.

Good thing Andi has a brother who's an attorney!! Andi shares Henry's story with her brother and wheels start moving. Will Henry ever be able to go back home? What will Andi think of the circus?

I love that this book was written for youngsters from a historical perspective. There just aren't enough books out there covering these time periods for today's youth. I also love how this book does have a slight, but not overbearing, religious tone to it. It's obvious that Andi and her family are believers. I would highly recommend this book to young readers as it will give them a great story with historical perspective.

Many thanks to Kregel Publishing and Susan K. Marlowfor providing a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. These thoughts and recommendation are entirely my own.

To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander

To Win Her Favor (Belle Meade Plantation, #2)To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I literally sat and read this book in one sitting!!

Maggie is an avid horse trainer. She and her dad are seeing things in a bleak light and she fears she may lose her land and everything with it. What would she do without her prized horses? That all changes when the Irishman Cullen appears in the cemetery where her dad is praying. When Mr. Linden offers Cullen the deal of a lifetime, there is a stipulation attached. Can Cullen handle that?

I appreciate the brief history lesson that author, Tamera Alexander offers at both the beginning and end of this book. It really put a few things in perspective for me!!

I asked my husband tonight at dinner if he had been in Cullen's situation, what would he have done? Of course, today is a much different place and time than back in Maggie's day. He would not have handled the situation the same way that Cullen did. The romantic in me was a little taken aback by his answer....but then, would I have accepted his actions?

I loved this story on many different levels. The way that Maggie grew to accept those different than her was very heartwarming. I hope we hear more about Kissa in future writings from Ms. Alexander!!

I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with the characters in this book. During the time I was reading, I have no idea what happened around me because I was fully vested into this story. Thank you for an enjoyable read, Tamera!

Review: After the Fog by Kathleen Shoop

After the FogAfter the Fog by Kathleen Shoop
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Every May 6 is National Nurse's Day (Teacher's Day too!) with the following week celebrating these two great professions (of which I'm a part of both!). Kathleen Shoop has written her sophomore novel about Rose Pavlesic, a community health nurse working in Donora, Pennsylvania in the 1940's. The steel mills are what keeps Donora running and, due to the economy, Rose wonders what will keep her running monetarily. There is so much more work to do than there are medical professionals who can care for the citizens of Donora. When a new mill Superintendent moves to town, many changes begin to take place. Could he and his wife possibly fund the clinic that Rose has dreamed of all these years?

I must admit, I had a bit of difficulty getting into this story but once I did, it became hard to put it down. I found this to be a very enjoyable book but I want to explain why I gave it the rating that I did. First of all, historical fiction is my favorite genre of books to read. Ms. Shoop kept true to the historical accuracy of the 1940's. I did take some offense at the strong language and suggestive scenes (a couple of them became borderline erotic). I guess that took me a bit by surprise and has caused a slightly lower rating from me than I would have otherwise given.

Rose's character is very dynamic. She is a true Type A personality nurse. She puts her clients first and foremost, but at the expense of her family. How many of us in the field have done this to ourselves and our families? Nursing professionals truly do have a calling to do what they love but often times we fail to care for ourselves, thus finding it necessary to become a patient. I love how Ms. Shoop "got this" and was able to incorporate it into Rose's character.

I do recommend this book with warnings and reservations as previously mentioned. The story is incredible if you are able to look beyond the language (which I can) and the intense scenes (this was a bit much for me). I would like to encourage you to read the guest post by Ms. Shoop about her book and the Donora Fog. You may find that post here.

If you've read this book, what did you think?

Many thanks to Kim Cecere and Kathleen Shoop for providing this book for review.

The Sister Wife by Diane Noble

The Sister Wife (Brides of Gabriel, #1)The Sister Wife by Diane Noble

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this book up on a recent book splurge. I have always been intrigued by the Mormon lifestyle, although I do not believe in it. I have watched the popular TV show "Sister Wives" and when I saw this book, I knew I wanted to read it.

Lady Mary Rose is aboard a ship bound for America. Accompanying her is her grandfather, the Earl, and several small children. The Earl has learned from Brigham Young of this new religion that is meant to restore the Church. The Earl jumps at the chance to join this religion and learn all of it's ways. While aboard, Mary Rose befriends a young woman named Bronwyn. One fateful evening, Mary Rose is forced to assist Bronwyn in the delivery of her and Griffin's child. That one night changed EVERYTHING.

Gabe is really proud of this ship that he has designed. By all appearances, this ship is the fastest and best there is. His best friend and captain Hosea agrees. These two men have been through everything together, yet there are secrets that neither one knows about that is bound to destroy their friendship. After Hosea marries Gabe and Mary Rose at sea, many things begin to change.

Life in Nauvoo, IL is entirely different than Mary Rose would have thought. The Prophet's teachings are not aligning with what Mary Rose remembers her mother teaching her from the Bible. Men and women are separated during worship service, each sitting on different sides. One day, Prophet demands that all women leave so that he can give new revelations to the men. The men are not allowed to talk of the revelation and only a few will be chosen to serve the Lord in such a manner. It's then that Mary Rose's life takes a turn that she's not sure she can handle.

What would you do if your spouse left you for another? Or wanted to include another in your relationship? For some, this has already happened. I know that I would never agree to my husband taking another wife. If my husband were to ever be unfaithful, that would end our marriage. That is the ONLY way our marriage would end as well. Husbands are to treat their wives as Christ does the Church (Ephesians 6). The only way Christ leaves us is if we leave Him first. The same in a marriage. I know that my husband will never stray because it has happened to him. He knows and values the marriage vows and I know that our marriage vows will be forever honored. Sure, we have tough times and want to call it quits. However, our faith and trust in the Lord get us through those time and we come out the other side loving each other even more than before. As a matter of a personal note, I met my husband online. His chat name was (and still is) Faithfulman. We met in a christian chatroom and I was Irishrose. After marrying my Faithfulman, I have been Faithfulgirl. Thought I'd throw that in there for all those of you wondering! :)

I was angry at Gabe for even suggesting that he take another wife. I can imagine how Mary Rose must have felt...she wasn't pretty enough...wasn't good enough...all the things a person who's being rejected thinks about. She compares herself to Bronwyn, wondering why Gabe would choose her over his first love (or so he said about Mary Rose). Bronwyn, on the other hand, seemed to only be thinking of herself and her needs, not so much that of her best friend. I was extremely disappointed when Bronwyn broke the trust of Mary Rose. Gabe himself, was also very selfish. After all, he still hasn't revealed his deepest, darkest secret to Mary Rose. His life, in my opinion, is a lie with her. I lost all respect for him along when Hosea did.

I do look forward to reading the next book in this series as the title alludes to some changes. I'll be purchasing that book on my next book shopping trip!

Teaser: The Last Letter by Kathleen Shoop

Today it is my pleasure to offer you a teaser of a debut novel by Kathleen Shoop! I am just getting started with this book but I'm hooked so far!
Katherine's mom is dying and ends up on Katherine's doorstep. There are some issues from the past (I'm just now finding out what some of those are but I'm not going to ruin it for you!) and Katherine has to try to find a way to forgive her mom before it's too late.
From what I've read so far, it's a bit creepy, mysterious, and obvious that Katherine has had a troubled life. There is a deep dark secret that has caused her family to lose their life of luxury and they find themselves homesteading.
My only problem with this book so far is that it switches back and forth from present day to the past. For those of you who have faithfully read my blog since it's inception, you know that I struggle with these types of stories. However, the chapters are fairly short and I'm able to keep up with this one better than previous books such as this in the past.

I do hope you will take the time to check this book out. Also be sure to check back soon for a full review on this book!
Many thanks to Jessica at BookSparks for offering this book for me to read!

The Lady of Bolton Hill by Elizabeth Camden

For starters, I love this cover! It conveys elegance, beauty, and suspense! This book is packed with all three!
I am a huge fan of historical fiction and this one is a bit different than others I've read. Clara and Daniel confront issues that are not normally in books of this genre. There love and admiration for each other will be tested throughout time. One of my favorite scenes is where Daniel tells of how he met Clara. For the time period, this is pretty significant.
I do think Clara is a bit overdone. She tries and tries and tries to get Daniel to mold to her ways. She tries to hard to the point that her pleas become ridiculous. She is very persistent for a woman of the time and some may see that as a positive.
I do not agree with a situation in the book concerning Daniel and his mother (it's towards the end when he visits a particular place). I want to point that out that I do not support that notion in this book.
There is another character in this book that I really hope to see mentioned again. I'm not sure if a sequel is planned but is so, I'd love to know more about his story. I enjoyed reading about his part in Clara's life.
I give this one 4 out of 5 stars!

Would you like to read this book?? I'm giving it away! Check out my current giveaway!!

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The Lady of Bolton Hill
Bethany House (June 1, 2011)
by
Elizabeth Camden

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A research librarian and associate professor, Elizabeth Camden has a master’s in history from the University of Virginia and a master’s in library science from Indiana University. She has published several articles for academic publications and is the author of four nonfiction history books. Her ongoing fascination with history and love of literature have led her to write inspirational fiction. Elizabeth lives with her husband in central Florida.

A word from Elizabeth: I am a college librarian in central Florida by day, but by night I can be found pounding out inspirational historical novels the moment the sun goes down. I love writing books about fiercely intelligent people who are confronted with profound challenges. As a rather introverted person, I have found that writing is the best way for me to share my faith and a sense of resilience with others.

As for who I am? I love old Hitchcock films, the hour before sunset, a long, sweaty run through the Florida countryside, and a glass of good wine. After spending my entire adult life on a college campus (either as a student or a librarian) I have finally been able to pursue my ultimate goal of writing professionally.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Female journalists are rare in 1879, but American-born Clara Endicott has finally made a name for herself with her provocative articles championing London's poor. When the backlash from her work forces a return home to Baltimore, Clara finds herself face-to-face with a childhood sweetheart who is no longer the impoverished factory worker she once knew. In her absence, Daniel Tremain has become a powerful industry giant and Clara finds him as enigmatic as ever. However, Daniel's success is fueled by resentment from past wounds and Clara's deeply-held beliefs about God's grace force Daniel to confront his own motives. When Clara's very life is endangered by one of Daniel's adversaries, they must face a reckoning neither of them ever could have foreseen.

When Clara Endicott and Daniel Tremain's worlds collide after twelve years apart, the spark that was once between them immediately reignites into a romance neither of them thought possible.

But time has changed them both.

Daniel is an industrial titan with powerful enemies. Clara is an idealistic journalist determined to defend underprivileged workers.

Can they withstand the cost of their convictions while their hearts, and lives, hang in the balance?
