Q&A Interview with Jerusha Agen, author of This Redeemer, Book Three in the Sisters Redeemed Series:

What message do you hope your readers will take away after reading your novel?

I hope and pray that women who are in abusive relationships, poverty, depression, or any other type of seemingly hopeless situation will see in this story that there is hope even in the most desperate of situations, and that His name is Jesus. For readers who have no experience with such desperation, I hope that they will be convicted of the need to selflessly love the “unlovable” in the world and to humbly forgive the “unforgivable.” For all of us, there is hope!

Do you have any practical advice for writers on how to keep their sanity in our run, run, run world?

Staying sane in our hectic culture is my daily struggle! Some things that help me most are setting writing goals for each day and actually quitting for the day when I reach the goal. I’ve found that I have to limit when I’ll allow myself to check email or go online, so that I don’t end up letting my sleep or work time disappear into the Internet vacuum.

As a writer, it’s also too easy to work whenever I’m home, even on Sundays, which translates into no day off from work and eventual burnout. I believe that rest, especially on our day set aside to worship, is crucial to staying in the rat race for the long haul, so I’ve now made every Sunday a no-writing, no-Internet day. I end up with a free, restful day away from social and work pressures that allows me to recharge for the work week ahead. The other essential for sanity is sleep!

A Child Called It by David Pelzer

A Child Called A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a highly disturbing book. I find it hard to believe that someone could be this cruel! It's a true story though...to the point that is is documented as one of the worst cases in California child abuse history. I admire the author for coming forward with his story.

This was a super fast, enjoyable read! Bryn just wants to be accepted like any other teenage girl. However, she is aware that what is happening between her and Preston is not "normal", yet she's so scared that she can't tell anyone about it. Then the accident occurs and she is really left with no choice. On top of that, her mom isn't around to comfort her so her Grandmother comes to visit. Last time she saw her grandmother, things didn't turn out too well. She just didn't fit into her grandmother's lifestyle. If all of that isn't enough, this book (RL) shows up and begins "talking" to Bryn through pages. How will it all sort out? Guess you'll have to read this one and your opportunity to win it is coming shortly!

I was a little horrified when I first started reading this book. I'm not saying that to scare you but I don't read the backs of books before reading the book so I didn't know that Preston was abusing Bryn. It caught me off-guard. While I do not have 100% evidence, I'm fairly certain that a former ex-boyfriend of my oldest step-daughter might have been abusing her. Preston and this young man were so very similar it made my skin crawl. I will never fully know what happened in my DSD's situation (and now it's not really a matter of concern for that young man as he drowned last summer), but I do hope that ANY person (male/female; young/old; rich/poor; etc) will GET HELP if they are victims of abuse! Bryn got help in some unconventional ways but not without the love and support of her family. She was so scared to do the "right thing" but having a family who loved her was a huge help. What about those people who don't have loving families? I've always wondered what happened to them. Do they ever recover or are they chronically involved with people who only take from them? I pray to God that I will never have another family member or friend in that situation. I pray you will never find yourself there either. This book gets 4.5/5 stars from me! :)

One other thing, this is book 2 in a series but I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I did not feel that I hadn't missed out on anything by not reading Motorcycles, Sushi, and One Strange Book first.

Are you ready for a giveaway? It's been awhile since I've done one of these! I hope to have some more in the near future!!

Book Review: Love by the Yard by Gail Sattler

This is a super sweet book about an abused widow with two small children and her landscaper. Oh, yeah, and a crazy dog named Boffo!! For some reason, Boffo is my favorite character in this book. He's absolutely hilarious and I found myself with bated breath wondering what antic he was going to enact next. That's quite a bit coming from a non-big dog lover. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs...I just don't want to be around when they jump up on me or lick my face.

Anyway, back to the story....

Poor Brendan can't get any work done with Boffo around and Shanna can't get any work done with the kids underfoot and, of course, Boffo. Somewhere along the way, a compromise is made between Shanna and Brendan which changes the course of their lives.

What's Boffo's greatest antic? It's the last part of the book....but don't read the last chapter first like some are known to do (ahem...Ali!)

If I were to ever have another son (not likely to happen...I already have plenty of children) I would want to consider the name Brendan. I like the sound of it!!
